Rick Alan Rice (RAR) Literature Page

ATWOOD - "A Toiler's Weird Odyssey of Deliverance" -AVAILABLE NOW FOR KINDLE (INCLUDING KINDLE COMPUTER APPS) FROM AMAZON.COM. Use this link.

CCJ Publisher Rick Alan Rice dissects the building of America in a trilogy of novels collectively calledATWOOD. Book One explores the development of the American West through the lens of public policy, land planning, municipal development, and governance as it played out in one of the new counties of Kansas in the latter half of the 19th Century. The novel focuses on the religious and cultural traditions that imbued the American Midwest with a special character that continues to have a profound effect on American politics to this day. Book One creates an understanding about America's cultural foundations that is further explored in books two and three that further trace the historical-cultural-spiritual development of one isolated county on the Great Plains that stands as an icon in the development of a certain brand of American character. That's the serious stuff viewed from high altitude. The story itself gets down and dirty with the supernatural, which in ATWOOD - A Toiler's Weird Odyssey of Deliveranceis the outfall of misfires in human interactions, from the monumental to the sublime. The book features the epic poem "The Toiler" as well as artwork by New Mexico artist Richard Padilla.

Elmore Leonard Meets Larry McMurtry

Western Crime Novel

I am offering another novel through Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing service. Cooksin is the story of a criminal syndicate that sets its sights on a ranching/farming community in Weld County, Colorado, 1950. The perpetrators of the criminal enterprise steal farm equipment, slaughter cattle, and rob the personal property of individuals whose assets have been inventoried in advance and distributed through a vast system of illegal commerce.

It is a ripping good yarn, filled with suspense and intrigue. This was designed intentionally to pay homage to the type of creative works being produced in 1950, when the story is set. Richard Padilla has done his usually brilliant work in capturing the look and feel of a certain type of crime fiction being produced in that era. The whole thing has the feel of those black & white films you see on Turner Movie Classics, and the writing will remind you a little of Elmore Leonard, whose earliest works were westerns. Use this link.

EXPLORE THE KINDLE BOOK LIBRARY

If you have not explored the books available from Amazon.com's Kindle Publishing division you would do yourself a favor to do so. You will find classic literature there, as well as tons of privately published books of every kind. A lot of it is awful, like a lot of traditionally published books are awful, but some are truly classics. You can get the entire collection of Shakespeare's works for two bucks.

You do not need to buy a Kindle to take advantage of this low-cost library. Use this link to go to an Amazon.com page from which you can download for free a Kindle App for your computer, tablet, or phone.

Amazon is the largest, but far from the only digital publisher. You can find similar treasure troves atNOOK Press (the Barnes & Noble site), Lulu, and others.

VOODOO CHILDREN, "Chile" or Child

One of the nicest things Jimi Hendrix left this world was his inspirational take on a box of tunes that have electrified guitarists since they were first given life by the alien love force himself. From Electric Ladyland, Hendrix' third and final album, "Voodoo Chile" was recorded in 1968.  Wikipedia offers this background:

During the Electric Ladyland recording sessions at the Record Plant, Hendrix and the band often explored the New York City club scene and frequently jammed with the performers. After one such jam at the nearby Scene Club, Hendrix brought a group of twenty or so back to the studio,[10] including Steve Winwood, Jack Casady, and Larry Coryell. Hendrix proceeded to record "Voodoo Chile" with Mitch Mitchell (drums), Winwood (organ), and Casady (bass) (Coryell was invited to play, but declined, feeling that the music did not need him).

Steve Winwood recalled "There were no chord sheets, no nothing. He [Hendrix] just started playing. It was a one-take job, with him singing and playing at the same time. He just had such mastery of the instrument and he knew what he was and knew his abilities". Engineer Eddie Kramer saw it differently: "The idea that these jam sessions were informal is something that I completely disagree with. They may have seemed casual to the outside observer, but Jimi plotted and planned out nearly all of them. He'd reason that if he had his songs together, if he really wanted to pull out what he heard in his head, he needed the right people ... and that's what he did".

The song "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" was recorded by the Experience as the final cut on the Ladyland record. It was released as a single following Hendrix death, going to number one on the U.K. charts.

Authorship: There is plenty of Voodoo confusion regarding the Electric Ladyland tracks, which featured the jam with Winwood, Mitchell and Casady that was "Voodoo Chile". It was clearly a riff on Muddy Waters' "Rolling Stone", which Hendrix performed in his live show, and it was slowish and bluesy, though Mitch Mitchell's cool drum licks were more out of jazz school, rather Gene Krupa-like. The "Voodoo Chile" lyrics are all Hendrix (see below).

"Voodoo Child" (Slight Return) was written by Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore, who played together in Rainbow following Dio's time with Elf and Blackmore's with Deep Purple. It is their song that Hendrix played to close Electric Ladyland, i.e., the "slight return", which is an expression used in theater regarding the revisiting of an earlier theme. It is this song that guitarists everywhere wail on, and what you hear in the videos presented here. The theme that ties the two voodoo songs together is found in their choruses, which both state the claim to being a "voodoo child" and use the same C to D build to take the tune back to its E foundation.

Well, I'm a voodoo chile
Lord I'm a voodoo chile

Well, the night I was born
Lord I swear the moon turned a fire red
The night I was born
I swear the moon turned a fire red
Well my poor mother cried out "lord, the gypsy was right!"
And I seen her fell down right dead
(Have mercy)

Well, mountain lions found me there waitin'
And set me on a eagles back
Well, mountain lions found me there,
And set me on a eagles wing
(Its' the eagles wing, baby, what did I say)
He took me past to the outskirts of infinity,
And when he brought me back,
He gave me a Venus witch's ring
Hey!
And he said "Fly on, fly on"
Because I'm a voodoo chile, baby, voodoo chile
Hey!

Well, I make love to you,
And lord knows you'll feel no pain
Say, I make love to you in your sleep,
And lord knows you felt no pain
(Have mercy)
'Cause I'm a million miles away
And at the same time I'm right here in your picture frame
(Yeah! What did I say now)
'Cause I'm a voodoo chile
Lord knows I'm a voodoo chile, Yeah!

(Yeah, but I say now, yeah,)

Well my arrows are made of desire
From far away as Jupiters sulphur mines
Say my arrows are made of desire, desire
From far away as Jupiters sulphur mines
(Way down by the Methabe Sea, yeah)
I have a humming bird and it hums so loud,
You think you were losing your mind, hmmm...

Well I float in liquid gardens
And Arizona new red sand
(Yeah)
I float in liquid gardens
Way down in Arizona red sand

Well, I taste the honey from a flower named Blue,
Way down in California
And the New York drowns as we hold hands

'Cause I'm a voodoo chile
Lord knows I'm a voodoo chile
Yeah!

Stevie Ray Vaughn

SRV seems to have inherited the Hendrix mantle in many people's minds, perhaps because he was early on doing full-bore recreations of the Hendrix oeuvre and with an extra measure of his own brand of fire. If one was looking around for someone who seems like he might in fact be a Voodoo Child, Stevie Ray Vaughn seems to have had the requisite gris-gris.

Zakk Wylde Rocks with Les Paul Trio

Technique and virtuosity aside, what really separates the monster players like Zakk Wylde and the late Stevie Ray Vaughn is sheer physical strength. Watching either of these guys attack a guitar may make one feel inadequate as a physical force. And by the way, Wylde is doing all these pyrotechnics on an acoustic-electric, and doing it all to perfection. This too little viewed video is from Front and Center series on PBS, and that is the Les Paul Trio in support of Mr. Wylde, with Lou Pallo on Guitar (replacing the late Les Paul), Nicki Parrott on Bass, John Colianni on Piano, and Anton Fig ("the Thunder from Down Under" of the Letterman band) on Drums.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Kenny Wayne Shepherd's "Voodoo Child" is sedate compared to Zakk Wylde's offering, filled with tricks and sight gags, but fine nevertheless.

Jimi Hendrix

This video was recorded in July of 1970 (Hendrix died in September) and it is great in so many ways, not the least of which is the low profile presentation of the band, like a group of locals jamming in the park. Hendrix is playing the "Voodoo Child" tune by Dio and Blackmore.

Everybody Hates Ritchie

Along with Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow) is the guy who makes me crank up the radio volume when I hear his playing, usually before I really realize what I am hearing. You get a lot of him on Sirius Radio's "Deep Tracks" channel, and as a guy who didn't really pay any attention to Blackmore when he was in his prime, I find the perfection of his chops and his tone to be tough to beat.

He never seemed to take the easy path in his playing, nor one supposes in his personal life. He created the template for metal/classical fusion and influenced famous players including Paul Gilbert, Randy Rhoads, and Yngwie Malmsteen, but he retired from hard rock years ago. He has been married numerous times but since finally settling into a stable family situation he has become somewhat odd among his peer group. He and his wife (Candice Night) have fronted Blackmore's Night, a folk-traditionalist outfit that since 1997 have released nine studio albums. Just for the record, when musician-husbands start working professionally with their spouses it is often a sign that no one else in their world really understands them.

This has been something of an affront to fans of hard rock and metal music, who also haven't cared for Blackmore's refusal to give what they might consider to be proper credit to other guitar gods. He didn't think Stevie Ray Vaughn was so hot, for instance. In fact, he grew so bored with band mates through the years that he developed a reputation for moodiness and indifference. He explained it this way to Guitar International: "It’s just a thing I have. I think as soon as I’ve known anybody for more than three months, I get tired of them. Really, it’s probably a psychological thing with myself. I’m basically kind of insecure with myself, and I take it out on other people." That is not a great formula for developing lasting business and social relationships, but then Blackmore never cared much for business, either. Of his last go around with Deep Purple, he said: "With the last go round in Deep Purple, the guys were very “Well, another day, another dollar—just get the job done. We’re doing good business.” And I thought “Good business, yeah, that’s great, but we’re not sounding good here, lads. We’ve got someone out front there who’s making a mockery of things.” But nobody seemed to give a damn. Maybe I don’t have too much to say, but I decided I’ve got to say something other than being in the lot. So that’s when I decided to pull out."

Here is what Ritchie Blackmore does these days. Thematically, it does have some themes in common with "Smoke on the Water". I can appreciate what the irascible one is doing here.-RAR
