Volume 4-2011

RAR's SONG OF THE WEEK:

Inspired by the demonstrations in Zuccotti Park and other Occupy Wall Street locations around the country, "Start A Fire" explores the motivations of those who aren't quite ready to make the commitment that those people living outside in the cold are making. Click on the cover shot above to listen to "Start A Fire", a RAR casual. And thanks to whomever is pictured in the shot above, taken recently in Zuccotti Park.

Annie Piper

Annie Piper's press material lists some old school Chicago blues artists as her inspiration. "It was Paul Butterfield Blues Band playing 'Born in Chicago' - I knew straight away that this was the direction I was heading." she says. Piper began playing electric guitar at 12 years old, but became a devoted musician when she was given her first bass at age 14. She quickly discovered an affinity with the instrument, preferring to lay down a groove rather than scream out a solo. Piper may or may not be a video visionary - check the evidence below for yourself - but she is one right-in-the-pocket bass player and a power house blues singer.

Kane Afford

Is Kane Afford, the techno-pop singer from Melbourne, a "real deal"? This is not clear, as it never is given the genre he works in. It is difficult to separate the infectious beat from the melody and lyric lines, at least for those of us who suffered a degree of brain damage upon first hearing disco back in the mid-'70s. Sure, it's different now that it is infused with hip hop and a kind of naked expression that convinced your grandmother that mankind was lost, but it's a hair's breadth that difference. Yours truly likes Kane Afford, for some reason, despite it all. I may just be vulnerable to the suggestive wordplay of this land down under menace. - RAR
