MAKING MOVIES...

Over the next many editions, RARWRITER.com is presenting a journal of our experiences with exploring how "The RAR Movie" - a screenplay written by RARWRITER.com Publisher Rick Alan Rice and featuring 18 original compositions - might be brought to final production.

Our intent is to explore the processes of film making to gain insights into the work and to gain the inputs of people who might have valuable insight into the challenges involved, including how some obstacles may be overcome.

One of the first people we contacted was New York City  playwright Kyle Jarrow, (below left) who won an OBIE Award in 2004 for his humorously barbed and quite musical look at Scientology ("A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant"). Kyle also wrote the screenplay for Armless, a 2009 film that was presented at this year's Sundance Film Festival (2010). Other of his works include "Gorilla Man" and "Whisper House" (with Duncan Sheik), "Hypochondria", "Rip Me Open", "Hostage Song" (with playwright Clay McLeod Chapman), "President Harding is a Rock Star" and "Love Kills".

Besides being a leading progressive playwright, Kyle is a songwriter (many of his theater works are musical) and a rock musician known for his popular bands The Fabulous Entourage and Super Mirage.  He knows a great deal about script development, composing for stage and screen, and getting his projects produced. We provided him with a synopsis of our script and filled him in on the concept of the piece. Our question to Kyle - how to proceed?

"So, first of all, this sounds like a very cool project" he told us. "The rock n roll movie is a genre that has sort of faded away since the 60s -- and  I think bringing it back (in an indie-rock type way) is a great idea. You might also want to check out the movie "9 Songs" directed by Michael Winterbottom for some inspiration. Not exactly what you're  talking about, but has some similarities.

"It also sounds like a huge project, in terms of scope. My first piece of advice, for what it's worth, would be to find a producer to partner with you on it. Someone who (hopefully) has connection to funding sources (i.e., knows rich people) as well as connections to film industry folks. It definitely seems to me, on a project like this, that a good partner would help you tag team all the work and make it much more manageable. That would be a helpful first step, I think.

I think the next step should be producing the film. Worry about distributing later. If it turns out well, it's something you can submit to film festivals, and then hopefully get a film distribution company (like thinkfilm or ifc or some such) to distribute it. That would probably be the simplest path to getting the film to the most people..."

With that introduction, perhaps the next step is to share the concept and casting ideas we have developed to get us all on the same page.
